About This Location:

Just after 9AM on July 15, 1997, fashion designer Gianni Versace was walking up the steps of his mansion in Miami Beach when he was shot at point blank range in the head. Versace was rushed to the hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. At the time of his death, Gianni Versace was one of the most famous fashion designers in the world and was worth an estimated $1 Billion.

Gianni Versace was spree killer Andrew Cuanan's fifth and final victim. Cuanan had killed 2 of his close friends in Minneapolis, a real estate developer in Chicago, and a cemetery caretaker in New Jersey before making his way to Florida. Ten days after Versace's murder, Andrew Cuanan's body was found on a houseboat, it appeared that he had shot himself.

There was no suicide note with Cuanan's body, and the motive for the killings remain unclear to this day. Cuanan was in financial trouble, after living above his means and maxing out all of his credit cards, although it's unclear exactly how his financial situation may have led Cuanan to murder. It was also speculated that Cuanan had gone on the spree after finding out he was HIV positive, but an autopsy determined that he did not have HIV.

Finding the Location

The mansion was sold after Gianni Versace's murder and is currently a high end boutique hotel which houses a restaurant named "Gianni's" after Gianni Versace. The hotel's nightly rates range from $1,000 to $1,500 a night. If you're going to visit, parking can be difficult and Ocean Dr. tends to be very busy. If you are going to the restaurant or hotel, it appears that valet is available.
