The crime that ended the summer of love, the murder of pregnant Hollywood actress Sharon Tate, her unborn child, and 4 others at her home in Beverly Hills rocked the nation. A little past midnight on August 9, 1969, four members of the now infamous Manson Family entered the Cielo Dr. residence and butchered everyone inside. This crime and the murders of the LaBiancas the following night were meant to entice “Helter Skelter”, which Manson believed to be an impending race war.
After the murders, William Garreston (who had previously been living in the guest house on the property) moved into the main home where the murders took place. He moved out in 1988, after which the home was sold several times. In 1992, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails rented the home and set up a recording studio nicknamed “Pig”, referencing Susan Atkins writing “PIG” in blood on the front door of the home during the 1969 murders. Several albums were recorded there, including NIN album “The Downward Spiral” and Marilyn Manson’s album “Portrait of an American Family”. The home can also be seen in NIN’s music video for “Gave Up”. Reznor moved out in December of 1993, and in 1994 the home was demolished and the address was changed to 10066 Cielo Dr.
