On the afternoon of December 14, 2025, legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife of 36 years, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found dead of multiple sharp force injuries inside the couple's Brentwood, Los Angeles home. Their 32 year old son, Nick Reiner, was arrested later that same evening. He has since been charged with two counts of first degree murder in connection with their deaths.

Michele Singer Reiner

Michele Singer was born on March 3, 1955. She began her career as a photographer and shot the cover photograph of Donald Trump's 1987 book "The Art of the Deal." She met Rob Reiner in 1988 while working as the still photographer on the set of "When Harry Met Sally...," and the couple has often said that her presence on set inspired Rob to rewrite the film's ending. The two married in 1989 in a small ceremony in Hawaii and had three children together: Jake, born in 1991, Nick, born in 1993, and Romy, born in 1997. Rob had one older, adopted daughter, Tracy, from his previous marriage to Penny Marshall.

Michele Singer Reiner later moved into film producing and earned Primetime Emmy Award nominations for her work on the documentary "Albert Brooks: Defending My Life." Alongside her husband, she was a longtime advocate for LGBTQ rights and other progressive causes.

Rob Reiner

Robert Reiner was born on March 6, 1947 in the Bronx, New York City, the eldest son of comedy legends Carl Reiner and actress Estelle Reiner. The family moved to Los Angeles when Rob was 12. He first rose to national fame in the 1970s playing Michael "Meathead" Stivic on Norman Lear's "All in the Family," a role for which he won two Primetime Emmy Awards. He transitioned to directing with the 1984 mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap" and went on to direct many of the most beloved American films of the following two decades, including "Stand by Me" (1986), "The Princess Bride" (1987), "When Harry Met Sally..." (1989), "Misery" (1990), and "A Few Good Men" (1992).

Later in his career, Reiner also became one of the most publicly outspoken progressive political activists in Hollywood. In 2008, he and Michele co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which mounted the federal court challenge to California's Proposition 8 same sex marriage ban. His final completed film, "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues," was released three months before his death.

Nick Reiner

Nicholas Reiner was born on September 14, 1993 in Los Angeles. According to widely reported accounts by his own father, Nick first entered drug rehabilitation at the age of 14 and would go on to cycle in and out of rehab for years. In 2015, at age 21, Nick co-wrote the semi autobiographical film "Being Charlie" with his friend and rehab colleague Matt Elisofon. The film, directed by his father, is a fictionalized account of a young man's struggle with drug addiction and his relationship with his politically ambitious father.

In 2020, Rob and Michele placed Nick into a year long mental health conservatorship, which ended in 2021. Nick was homeless at various points during his adult life, but at the time of his parents' deaths he was living with them at the Chadbourne Avenue home. Los Angeles Police Department records later revealed that officers had been called to the Reiner home on multiple occasions over the previous decade due to incidents involving Nick.

The Night of the Murder

On the evening of December 13, 2025, Rob, Michele, and Nick Reiner attended a Christmas party at the Los Angeles home of comedian Conan O'Brien. According to multiple accounts of the evening reported by The New York Times, Nick was behaving erratically, and he and his father got into what one attendee described as a "very loud argument" during which Rob chastised him for his conduct. The family left the party earlier than expected.

Prosecutors allege that Nick fatally stabbed both of his parents inside the couple's Brentwood home in the early morning hours of December 14, 2025, and then fled the residence. Rob and Michele had been scheduled to have dinner that evening with former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

At approximately 3:00 p.m. on December 14, after Rob and Michele failed to arrive for a scheduled appointment with their massage therapist and did not respond to calls, the couple's youngest daughter Romy, who lived across the street from her parents with a roommate, went across the street to check on them. She found her father's body in the master bedroom of the home and ran back across the street. Her roommate called 911 at 3:38 p.m. Romy was reportedly not immediately aware that her mother had also been killed in the home.

Nick Reiner was arrested without resistance at approximately 9:15 p.m. that same evening in the Exposition Park neighborhood, near the University of Southern California.

Investigation and Charges

On December 16, 2025, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman formally charged Nick Reiner with two counts of first degree murder in Los Angeles County Superior Court Case Number 25CJCF08098. The charges include a special circumstances allegation of multiple murders and a special allegation that a knife was used, and carry a maximum sentence of either death or life in prison without the possibility of parole. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office has not announced whether they intend to seek the death penalty. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Head Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian and Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Chung of the Major Crimes Division.

Nick Reiner was initially represented by prominent Los Angeles defense attorney Alan Jackson, but Jackson withdrew from the case before the arraignment. A Los Angeles County public defender was appointed to represent him. Nick pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on February 23, 2026, and was ordered to remain in custody without bail. On April 29, 2026, he waived his right to a speedy trial. His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for September 15, 2026.

The Reiner House

The Reiner family home is a private, gated residence in the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue in the quiet, upscale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Rob and Michele Reiner had lived at the home for decades and had raised all three of their children together there.

The home is a private residence and remains part of an active legal and estate process, and is not open to the public. Out of respect for the grieving family and neighbors, please refrain from loitering or attempting to contact family members or neighbors. The neighborhood is heavily patrolled by both private security and the LAPD. If you do visit, please always stay on public roads and sidewalks and never trespass onto private property.
