About This Location:

Just after midnight on January 30, 1977, twenty-six Christine Freund and her thirty year fiancé John Diel were sitting in their car in Station Square. Earlier in the night the couple had seen the movie "Rocky" and they were getting ready to end their night at a dance club. Unfortunately, they wouldn't make it to the dance club that night.

David Berkowitz approached their vehicle on foot and fired at the couple three times and striking Christine Fruend twice. John Diel, who had only suffered minor injuries, quickly drove away and brought Christine to the hospital where she died several hours later. Neither Christine nor John had seen who fired the gun.

David Berkowitz terrorized New York City from July 1976 to July 1977. Over the course of his crimes, he wounded 7 people and murdered 6 people. His typical pattern involved targeting couples that were parked in cars and shooting them with a .44 caliber pistol. He was finally arrested on August 10, 1977 after receiving a parking ticket near one of his shootings. He was sentenced to 25-years-to-life in prison for each murder, to be served consecutively. He remains incarcerated at the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in New York.
